SETTINGS
As you play Zen Journey you will see an indicator that displays the quality of the Iom sensor signal. Red/Poor indicates that the Iom Sensors are not properly connected to the system/game or are not functioning properly. Green/Good indicates that sensors are connected and working properly.
NOTE: While you can play Zen Journey without using sensors, you will not be able to score any sessions as no active feedback data will be used during the meditations.
If you are experiencing any issues with your IomBlue sensors connecting to the program or your system, please refer to the IomBlue Troubleshooting Guide for assistance.
Set Session Settings
Zen Journey has a number of user settings that will let you create a personal experience each time you use the program. These settings can be changed each time you do a session in the program. The program also stores your last setting change each time you change them. You can easily adjust the volume/balance of the music and Master’s voice during the meditations by going to “Settings”. Settings also open each time you press “Begin Journey” from the Launch Menu to allow you to adjust the audio and other settings when you begin each session. When you are done press the “Save and Continue” button to proceed.
You access the session settings by clicking in the upper right or lower right icon on the screen labeled “Settings” (see below).
Difficulty
Values – 5 settings, “Easy” to “Very Difficult”
The difficulty level you select in Settings effects your scoring during meditation. In order for the meditation to be scored and count towards your next robe (see GAMEPLAY below). You must use your Iom sensors and maintain average coherence at or above the requirements based upon difficulty level.
The difficulty settings are as follows (average coherence):
- Very difficult = 95% +
- Difficult = 85% +
- Normal = 70% +
- Easy = 60% +
- Very Easy = 40% +
Music Volume
Values – 0% (muted) to 100% (loudest)
This setting effects the volume level of the background music during meditation as well as when navigating between various parts of the game.
Zen Master Volume
Values – 0% (muted) to 100% (loudest)
This setting effects the volume level of Zen Master Nissim Amon during all spoken sections.
GAMEPLAY
There are five levels of learning and meditation in Zen Journey you will pass through on your way to earning your Black Robe. With each level in the program that you advance to, new content is unlocked. This includes Zen Stories and the story of Buddha which are located in the Lecture Hall. In the Master’s Chamber you can access all of the guided meditations (all unlocked) that you must also do with the master to earn your robes and unlock additional content (see below).
In the Zen Garden you will find additional activities and exercises with the Master that will help you on your journey. These include Progressive Scan Meditation and Night Talk in the Buddha Garden.
As your practice and learn with the Master you will earn robes of varying colors to indicate your level of achievement. The levels, and the robe that you are working toward are:
- Level 1 – White Robe – 1 Successful Meditation (Master’s Chamber), complete Buddha Story 1 and Zen Story 1 (Lecture Hall).
- Level 2 – Brown – 4 Successful Meditations (Master’s Chamber), complete Buddha Story 2 and Zen Story 2 (Lecture Hall).
- Level 3 – Blue – 8 Successful Meditation (Master’s Chamber), complete Buddha Story 3 and Zen Story 3 (Lecture Hall).
- Level 4 – Purple – 16 Successful Meditation (Master’s Chamber), complete Buddha Story 4 and Zen Story 4 (Lecture Hall).
- Level 5 – Black – 32 Successful Meditation (Master’s Chamber), complete Buddha Story 5 and Zen Story 5 (Lecture Hall).
There are 3 primary sections to explore inside Zen Journey. They are:
Zen Garden
Lecture Hall
Master’s Chamber
In the Zen Garden you will find Progressive Scan Meditation and Night Talk in the Buddha Garden. While there are no points to be earned in the Zen Garden activities, these items will augment your Zen journey by providing you additional instruction and tools to help you achieve deeper awareness and relaxation.
Please note that Progressive Scan Meditation works best with your Iom sensor. For more information on Progressive Scan Meditation please click HERE.
Lecture Hall
The Lecture Hall contains all of the Zen Stories and the stories of Buddha that Zen Master Nissim Amon will present to you via video. Here you will learn more about Zen teachings and origins. These teachings are an integral part of obtaining your robes on your journey. As you progress through the various levels, this content is unlocked for you.
There are 5 Zen Stories and 5 Stories of Buddha – 1 of each for each level or robe. In order to successfully have each story count toward your robe, be sure to listen to each of them to the very end so that the session registers properly and your accomplishment is full acknowledged. When this occurs, a RED check mark will appear to the right of the story name as a means of helping you track your progress.
No activities in the Lecture Hall require Iom Sensors. There is no scoring other than ensuring you completely listen to each of the 2 stories per level.
There are 5 meditations available to you in the Master’s Chamber. These are scored events using your Iom sensors and are an important part of earning your Robes. You can repeat any of the meditations as you work toward achieving your next Robe but we highly recommend you participate in all of them as each is a unique and integral part of your Zen Journey.
Step 1 – Select Meditation
Before you begin, make sure you have your Iom Sensors plugged in and if using the white IomPro sensors you have started the IomDriverPro program as well (green butterfly icon). Ensure sensors are on properly and that the Iom Signal indicator is showing GREEN/GOOD signal quality. To begin, select the guided meditation.
Step 2 – Backing Music
You have your choice of 5 different backing tracks to listen to with the guided meditation. If you prefer NO music during the meditation please select any track and go to SETTINGS to adjust music volume to zero.
Once music selection has been made, press PLAY button to continue and countdown will begin for meditation start.
If you see the message below this indicates you are not using sensors or there is an issue with the sensor connection. You can proceed with the meditation if you would like but NO SCORING will occur and the meditation will not count toward your next Robe and Level.
Step 3 – Meditation Session
NOTE: While you are meditating you can the swipe up on an open part of the screen to see your average and current coherence scores. Swipe up again to toggle off.
The difficulty level you select in Settings effects your scoring during meditation. The difficulty settings are as follows (average coherence):
- Very difficult = 95% +
- Difficult = 85% +
- Normal = 70% +
- Easy = 60% +
- Very Easy = 40% +
During Meditations, if your average coherence is above your difficulty level you will progress and receive positive comments from Zen Master Nissim Amon. If you are below you will receive other comments that indicate your are not doing so well. Let those comments encourage you to keep up the good work in breathing and meditating or help guide you to get back on course. Comments include the following:
Positive
- You are doing very well
- Very nice, keep going
- You are on the right path
- Very good keep it up
- Keep going, your progress is good and steady
- Today you are excellent, one of the best
- You are shining today, like a bright star, keep it up
Other
- Your mind is wandering, let your thoughts pass you by
- Watch your breath
- You are a little tired today, perhaps you should go, get something to eat
- Your breath is ragged
- Breath as you have been taught, deeper, slower and more regular
- Something is bothering you, try sitting up straight
- Its been a long day, I feel I am loosing you
There will be occasional instructions during gameplay regarding breathing that may take you away from the traditional heart breath which is the best means of achieving increased levels of coherence. Think of these instances in the same way that stretching exercises are used to prepare you for physical activity rather than being the core activity. While it may have a temporary effect on your measured by coherence, it is part of the Master’s and the program’s overall instruction and objectives.
When you have completed your meditation you will be presented with a screen showing your results for the most recent meditation as well as your overall status in achieving your next Robe.
If your meditation session is unsuccessful and does not score high enough to count toward your next robe you will receive the following message:
Step 4 – Robe Awards
When you have met the requirements of each of the various Robes and Levels, the Robe becomes unlocked in the Master’s Chamber. This is indicated by the RED checkmark next to the Robe.
NOTE: When you first unlock the Robe you may only proceed to the Master’s Chamber (if not there already). Once there you must watch the associated Robe video before you can proceed to the next activity for the next Robe. You do this by clicking on the button labeled with the Robe name, i.e. “Brown Robe”.
